Sport historyRiver Gauja ancient banks have favoured development of Sigulda as winter sports center in Latvia for a long time.
First sleigh track in Sigulda was made in 1887.
In 1933 the first springboard in Batic states with strengh of 70 far jumps was built in Sigulda near Kalna Klauku houses. In 1936 the first international mountain skiing competition took place in Sigulda, where Estonian and Lithuanian sportsmen participated. Later on in Sigulda and its surroundings 12 different lengths and level of difficulty skiing track were established.
After World War II skiing competitions in Sigulda began again in the beginning of 50ties. Significantly grew number of mountain skiers in Sigulda, inhabitants of Sigulda became best of the mountain skiers.
In February 1960 the first Latvia USR Olympic Games took place in Sigulda where not only Sigulda young people won slalom and descent, but also jumping on skies.
During 60ties near Kalna Klaukas one more slalom track was built and one more springboard. In 1966 third slalom track was put into operation. Springboard with synthetic covering was built near bobsleigh track – the only on in Baltic States springboard of this kind which let jumpers train in summer. At that time Sigulda City Executive Committee allocated land for building two more tracks.
In 1986 bobsleigh came back to Sigulda. Global scale sports object was developing in the city. Together with Yugoslavian specialist from Sarajevo sleigh and bobsleigh track was built. Since then every year there took place international competitions – World Cup contests, World and European championships, World Junior championship. |
